How to Play Rummy

This rummy tutorial shows how to play rummy from the first deal to the end of a hand: what you receive, what you do on your turn, how you build groups, and when you declare. It is a step-by-step gameplay guide for beginners—not a full rulebook and not an overview of the Indian Rummy topic family.

This opens the Points Rummy practice table and its 13-card flow. Pool Rummy also has a local practice table. Deals also has a local practice table. The other variants do not.

Rummy Basics

Each player holds 13 cards and arranges them into sequences and sets. This page teaches that shared turn. Points, Pool, and Deals change how the match is scored. Legality stays on Rummy Rules. The wider topic stays on Indian Rummy.

Points Rummy practice table used for the how-to-play turn loop

This hand

Players
The practice tables seat you and two computer opponents.
Hand
13 cards for each player.
Piles
A face-down closed deck and a face-up open discard pile.
Goal
Declare when the hand meets that table’s group rules.

How a turn works

  1. Draw one card from the closed deck or the open discard pile.
  2. Arrange cards into sequences and sets.
  3. Discard one card onto the open pile.
  4. Build a pure sequence first, then a second sequence.
  5. Declare only when every card sits in a valid group.

Groups you can build

These examples show one group each, not a full 13-card hand.

Pure sequence

Same suit, in order, with no joker.

  • 5♥
  • 6♥
  • 7♥

Impure sequence

Same suit, with one joker filling a missing rank.

  • 4♠
  • 5♠
  • JK

Set

Same rank, different suits.

  • 8♠
  • 8♥
  • 8♦

Scoring

Cards in a counted group score 0. Unmatched cards score when the hand ends. Exact values, caps, and how a match adds those points differ by table. See Rummy Rules, Points Rummy, Pool Rummy, or Deals Rummy.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the hand unsorted after the deal.
  • Keeping high unmatched cards while chasing a weak group.
  • Ignoring cards taken from the open pile.
  • Declaring before a required pure sequence is complete.

Points, Pool, and Deals have practice tables. Start Points practice, start Pool practice, or start Deals practice.

FAQ

How to play rummy for beginners?

Receive 13 cards, arrange possible sequences and sets, then on each turn draw one card and discard one. Build a pure sequence early on most tables, finish the remaining groups, and declare only when every group is valid.

How many players can play rummy?

Common Indian Rummy tables seat 2 to 6 players. Always check the room limit before you join—player count can differ by variant and table.

How many cards does each player get?

In standard Indian 13-card Rummy each player is dealt 13 cards.

What is a pure sequence?

Three or more consecutive same-suit cards with no joker—for example 5♥ 6♥ 7♥

How do you declare in rummy?

When every card belongs to a valid group under the table rules, declare and show your hand. Exact requirements can differ by variant; an invalid declare usually adds a penalty.

What are common beginner mistakes?

Not arranging the hand early, holding high unmatched cards too long, mixing up sequences and sets, declaring without checking every group, and treating every variant as if scoring were identical.

Can I practise rummy online before downloading an app?

Yes. After you understand these steps, open the Points Rummy practice table on this site. It uses the Points 13-card flow with you and two computer players.
